SAY NO TO TURKISH AIRLINES!!! 

Dealing with jet lags can seriously be a pain. Especially when you travel back and forth from one side of the world to another in less than a month. Having said that, unfortunately this rant is not about some sort of petty issue like jet lag. This time my rant is about something bigger; something that left me with a mixed feeling of disappointment, anger, patheticity, helplessness, and the list goes on. So here goes my rant about a really bad experience that I had to go through when I traveled home and back flying through Turkish Airlines. 


Going back home in three and half years, you can only imagine how high the excitement level can be. Even the sulky flight attendants, the sucky aircraft with no TV screen, terrible food, unannounced delay at the airport, having to buy water at ridiculously expensive price, to name a few problems were all overlooked. Thanks to that overwhelmingly longing desire to be back home and be in the arms of loved ones. Everything was tolerable or tolerated somehow you can say!

The problem however was coming back to the United States from Nepal. The flight gets delayed everyday by about 4 hours at least at the airport in Nepal. Due to this reason, all these people travelling from Nepal are bound to get stuck at some International Airport in Turkey for about 23 hrs plus/minus, depending on how lucky or unlucky you get. It has been happening for over a month and the worst part is Turkish Airlines is doing nothing to fix this. 

If they know for sure that all the passengers in that flight are going to miss the connecting flight from Istanbul due to only an hour long transit, why don't they change the flight time in the first place? Its not the story of a day or two that you can simply blame the weather on and overlook. It has been happening for more than a freaking month. What the hell are these airlines people thinking?

The real problem starts at the TAV Istanbul Airport (I looked it up, just too irresistible to not mention the name!). Apparently, its an International Airport with the arrivals of flights from different corners of the world being announced in every two minutes or so. The irony however is that nobody understands English. I honestly found just one person in that whole airport who could fluently communicate with me in English. Not trying to offend anyone, but if its an International Airport, you would expect the workers to at least be able to communicate in a universal language spoken!

We were a bunch of Nepalese people trying to figure out where to go since people working at the airport were just sending us from one desk to another. All we could figure out was that since we had Nepalese passport, we wouldn't be issued even a one-day long visa to go stay at the hotel outside. The in-airport hotel was "already full". If you bear Nepalese passport, their attitude towards you just changes.

The thing that bothered me was even if something sour had happened in the past due to some foolish Nepalese people, how can you punish the 30-40 group of people who get stuck at the airport on a daily basis just because they share the same nationality? Is there some sort of beef going on between Turkey and Nepal? Even if there is how could those people working at the airport be so biased and inhuman?

Everybody else either got the outside-airport or in-airpoirt hotels besides Nepalese passengers. Even without a good place to stay for another 23 hours, we had no idea where were we supposed to go. Some of us were told to go to Passport check point, some were told to go to security, some were told to go to food court. We were so tired making rounds and rounds at the same place with no success of finding a reliable information. If you ask where the food court is, nobody understands you. They just walk away like you just don't exist for them.

Finally after arguing for long, we figured out the way to food court. Even getting food vouchers from the airlines help desk was like fighting some serious war. Even with boarding passes from their airlines, they would say you didn't fly with them and expect you to just smile and say thank you and pay for the god damn overpriced and sucky tasting food. Thanks to the gesture of kindness and unity that runs in our Nepalese blood, we all got together and gave them a good fight. If nothing we at least managed to get food vouchers from them. 

At the food court, it sucks for you if you're a vegetarian like me. They'll ask you to pick between two options, both non-vegetarian. If you eat meat you are good, if you don't; well sucks for you! They don't give a flying frack and expect you to still pick one of the two. I'm glad I am not one of those people who gives up easy, so I fought for my vegetarian meal. Then finding a place to sleep was another trouble. Even with empty couches in the rest area, they still send you back asking you to look for a bench to sleep on. After a good argument, we managed to convince them that at 2 am in the morning, no one is going to complain that the couches meant for watching TV are occupied by some tired passengers trying to get few hours of rest.

Looking back, I am surprised how we all managed to survive all that and come back all intact. One lesson is learnt though, if you are some introvert, who can't fight for yourself, better pack lunch, dinner, sleeping bags and whatsoever possible, if you are flying with Turkish Airlines. Even the introverts had reached their breaking point and had started speaking up! The service was that bad! People at the airport were honestly so rude that they were acting as if it was our own fault that we missed the flight and they were doing us a freaking huge favor by answering our questions. Most of them wouldn't answer anyway!

This trip made me realize how inhuman and emotionless some people can be. You're supposed to help these innocent group of people stuck at your airport. These people that your country has asked not to be issued visa because of which they are stuck inside an airport for over 23 hours. All they are asking is for you to be co operative a bit and help them out as much as you can. Instead, how can you just show your "behind" to them and just walk away? How does your inner self allow you to be that stone-hearted?

I wish I could publish this in some Turkish National newspaper; translated in their language of course! Not because I want to intimidate them or to be famous, but to let them know how badly their people are treating everyone else at the airport. Even those non-Nepalese people who managed to get hotels were still complaining about the service, so it was not only Nepalese people. The most saddening part though is how some people are treated so low just because they come from a certain country. Even if there is some beef going on between Turkey and Nepal, why would they punish these innocent travelers by treating them like a piece of shite? I've heard the same story from everyone flying with Turkish Airlines on a daily basis. 

So this is not just a rant but a request to all Nepalese people to completely avoid Turkish Airlines. Please think about how your fellow citizens are being mistreated there; it could also be you someday! Its not even that cheap tickets I tell you. If you save about $300-$400 more, you could fly with so much respect and dignity, so why would you pick Turkish Airlines? I'd never felt so much worthless in my life before. I know you only understand the depth of emotions once you go though them yourself but please take these words and do not bother putting yourself in that situation. Its not worth it at all trust me. So please people, spread the word and say no to Trukish Airlines! Lets bring this disrespect based on nationality to an end!

Yeah it's true, I noticed this problem myself.. the Turkish airline workers I spoke with were pretty friendly but were not good in English, and I was upset when I realized that I could get a visa to go to the hotel but the Nepalis on my plane could not. They need to provide equal services to all of the people that are inconvenienced by the delay, it is unacceptable to provide services only to some of the people.

    4. Speaking from experience: newspaper guys have a tendency to avoid publishing someone's negative opinions about established institutions - mainly for business reasons. So one thing you can probably do is reword certain parts of your writeup to make it more "factual", if you know what I mean, to possibly get their attention. One good idea would be to also include the experiences of several travelers taking different routes.

      Turkish Airlines aren't the only folks who have been treating us Nepalis badly. I have confronted employees at the Delhi airport cause they thought it was okay to shout "line ke baahar mat jaao - jail mein daal duunga" when they saw a couple laborer-type Nepalis leave the line to go to the bathroom just ten steps away. Similar experience at the Doha airport when an employee's tone changed from "sir", "please" and "thank you" to "do this" and "do that", with an upside-down smile, as soon as they saw the green Nepali passport in my hand.

      I am not much of a writer but I tend to confront those authorities firsthand when it's too much to handle. I would suggest you that you make heavy use of social media if you want to get your word out, and not hope that some newspaper would one day accept your article.

  4. Good issue picked up. When I was travelling back, our ambassador's wife was also in the same flight. She had a red diplomatic passport but still she was denied a visa to get out of the airport. Denying visas even to diplomatic personnel is a little over the top.

    2. I am very sorry to hear about your experience in Istanbul. I had some bad experience in this airport as well, even though I am Turkish. But please don't think that ALL Turkish people have something against Nepalese. You do not have to generalize everybody because of your experience. This makes us look racist. You will find everywhere people being mistreated because of their nationality. But I agree with you on one point, the service in this airport. It's crap. And they treat you like shit no matter where you are from.
      And second, getting a visa nowadays is a pain literally ANYWHERE. I had some troubles to just get a visa to study in England (And I am holding a Diplomatic passport because of my father). Getting a visa in the airport, I would not even try it. It's impossible (unless you have a EU-passport). But it's everywhere the same. I am sure, if I would travel to Nepal and try to get my visa in the aiport, it would be impossible. These things have to be done in embassies.
      And third, well, traveling with cheap flights. What did you expect? A 5-star menu?
      But, don't generalize Turkish people. You just had a very bad experience in a shitty place. I am sure, if you would travel Turkey and give it a chance, you would like it.

    3. I've never been to Turkey, but I'd like to go there one day. 'Turkey' evokes a sense of mysticism in me. Like it represents a place where east meets west, science meets religion. And I am sure, Most of the Turkish people are kind, good people. I remember hearing about the civil movement in Turkey against religious dictatorship and I appreciate you people even more.
      BUT, you cannot sugarcoat the fact that people with Nepali Passport are treated as shit in TAV Istanbul Airport. No, not every body. Not Americans or Eurpoean. NEPALESE People.
      Please don't expect us to say or believe that since the flight was cheap, we will literally make you sleep on the floor. Or laugh it off as a one-off experience. The bias and mistreatment is methodical. Its not because 'We can find RACIST people everywhere in the World'.
      And about getting a visa in the airport, in Nepal - there is a list of countries for which, this facility is provided. And we don't have to be so flexible here because our airport is not a transit, from where people connect to other flights, yours IS.
      I am sure you are a fair and nice person, but there is no sugarcoating the fact that your airport, right or wrong, treats Nepali Citizen like we are SHIT.
      My Take Away : Never travel anywhere in the world via your airport.

      a) I do want to start out by clearing out a thing with you. Maybe I forgot to mention but I have nothing against Turkish people in general... I have really good friends from Turkey so I know not every Turkish person is rude. However, people working in that airport or for Turkish Airlines were the ones really rude,, I couldn't find one person who was sympathetic that we had to stay in the airport for 23 hrs. They were acting as if it was no big deal!

      b) Getting an airport visa vs. getting visa for studying are completely different. People from other countries WERE issued visa at the airport as they were stuck for 23 hrs. It was just Nepalese people who were exception.

      c) No, sir! here you sound like one of those airport officials.. No I don't want a 5-star meal but do you get that I am a vegetarian and most other people were.. Is it too much to ask for to get a meatless meal if you have been growing up without eating meat? Do you think if I say I want vegetarian meal I am demanding for a 5-star meal?

      d) When did I say I'm never going to Turkey or whatsoever? If I do someday I will just make sure not to go anywhere close to the TAV airport.. I still get goosebumps if I think about what I went through in that airport!

  12. Good article Priyanka... I have also heard lots of complains about Turkish Airlines. For the most part price plays the major role for us Nepalese to go with TA but your experience definitely tells me not to go with them. Thanks

      Price definitely plays a big role. I paid about $1300 for my ticket which i thought was pretty good deal but if I find it again at the same price I'd rather pay more and fly with someone else.. I have friends who traveled with other airlines for $1400/1500 and the service was good. So wouldn't you rather pick them? The price is comparable.

      But then there are people who paid $800 for the same flight so I'm sure they don't have much to say. I wasn't happy with the service I got for the price I paid that is why I decided to post this. If you find tickets at comparable price then I would recommend you to avoid TA. Not worth it at all! (:

  13. Well from my own experience it is not just Turkish Airlines.. Same thing when I had the transit in Doha once. U could tell the difference between LHR-DOH and DOH-KTM be it in terms of service or food or even seat space.. and as always the return flight was delayed in kathmandu and we missed or connecting flight to London. The 'customer service' was appalling to say the least. Managed to chat to some of the staff there and honestly cant even blame them. They say 9/10 flights are delayed from Kathmandu.. So if u think about it, it is extra food/lodging/complains for them too and they know us Nepalese dont have many options anyway. It is us and our system in TIA that needs to change for these things to sort out. I am so fed up with looking for a good airline that I have never used the same airline twice.. But u can only blame everyone else so much... Anyway Im so frustated by these 'award winning' airlines that I have decided to give Air India a go this February.. Things can only get so bad after all..Jai Nepal

      I know you do have a good point. But then when I traveled with Lufthansa before, their service was outstanding. Then my room mate just arrived back via Air India and she told me her experience was also good. Some airlines are good and some are bad. I can only speak for TA because I flew with them. I'm sure there might be other airlines as terrible but I wouldn't be able to speak against until I fly with them as well.

      My point is that there are many airlines that provide you good service at comparable price. My whole intention was not just to bitch about them. It was rather to aware people so that if they can afford flying from other airlines then that would save them a great deal of hassle. Or if they still plan to pick Turkish Airlines then just be prepared for the worst. Because I can guarantee you that the service is just going to be terrible no matter what. (:

  14. I don't think it is because of the Turkish Airlines per se. I have had some similar experience, perhaps worse, with Virgin Atlantic in Chicago (where I was stuck for 4 days), in Taipei with Malaysian Airlines and at Bahrain with Gulf. In contrast, my experience with the TA was pretty decent. I think these issues are common for a citizen from third world wherever you fly from. In your case it happened to be in Turkey. Well, at least you had bunch of compatriots for company :)

    1. Yes I do agree with you. The discrimination based on nationality is just terrible. The thing that happened to me with TA has been the story going on with other people as well for over a month. Same story everyday. So I just wanted to aware people about it or at least warn them if nothing so that they prepare themselves for the worst.

Thwy will themselves try to fibd problem and beg us... we dont fight for our right.. above folks also settled down for nothing.. u could have literally clogged the airlinea counters for hrs wt as many as 34 people.. Dont fly with this airlines.. lets bring this airlines down for service

  16. I extremly agree with Mrs. Priyanka Neupane cuz our plane got delayed but I was lucky to be an American which they gave me a hotel to stay but their customer service was terrible. The way they ignoe the customer and talk with them rudely also they really don't give a damn when its come to Nepal and other countries beside USA, CANADA, UK, UN, and Finland. There were bunch of Nepali n other people who was sleeping in the floor at rest area n most of them were waiting 4 to 5 hours just to sleep in the rest area. Also, they got kicked out from the rest area in the morning at 5 am and I will tell not only to Nepali but everyone who travel out in Turkish Airline that not to fly from that Airline because of their customer service and the way they handle their Airlines. They also make their customer cry by talking shit to them and their manager don't give a shit when they do that. I felt extremly bad to those people n feel like taking their video so i can upload it but i was in a rush so i couldn't.

      And yes its good for people with green card or American passport that they get hotel. Having said that i heard the customer service was not good to you guys either.
      There was this guy from UK who wasn't happy at all and arguing with one of the workers. I know I can't speak for everyone but from what I saw around me, there weren't many people happy with the customer service. Thanks for the support on this article though! (:

    3. Well, a friend of mine, who is a US greencard holder, was denied the hotel at that airport even though he tried to convince the airlines staff that he was a US greencard holder. So, being a US greencard holder may not help you either.

  17. If you miss your connection flight there is noting else to do. You can not blaim this on the airline. Also the ground services are not related to the airline company. Amsterdam is one of the best transit airport in the world. You should book your next flight with connection from Schipol other than complening about some stupid staff. Would the U.S. let you go outside of the airport without having a visa?

      Just to point few things out:
      a) I didn't miss connecting flight on my own.. It was the airlines in general that didn't fly on time
      b) Even if it did because of the weather, it has been happening for a month so its about time they do something about it. Its their responsibility to accommodate these ppl stuck. Its not 6/7 hrs, we're talking about 23 hrs. Imagine having to spend that many hours in an airport with no service?
      c) The thing is even Indians and Pakistanis got visa, it was just Nepalese people who were left unattended there.
      d) I have no idea how the system works in USA but I bet they aren't as cold as the workers in that airport.
      e) The whole point of writing this article was to aware/prepare people travelling/thinking about travelling with Turkish airlines so that they would be prepared for what to expect. My intention was not to just bitch about them.

  18. This is the price we pay for being Nepali i guess.....! I know that doesn't make much sense.. but all these RED TAPES are here to screw humanity.... with so called "MAN MADE LAWS"....! I had a similar story with China Southern....! but the good thing was, the transit was merely 4-5 hrs and was not that of a a big deal....they just treated us like an alien at Guangzhou and therefore, the airlines is now in my black book......!

    1. I agree with you. Also I see some people commenting how we I should stop complaining since I missed the connecting flight. What I think they don't understand is getting stuck in an airport for few hrs vs. 23 hrs is just not comparable. I'm sure 4-5 hrs was quite tolerable for you.. I'm sorry you had to go through similar experience nevertheless.. Also what some people don't get is being mistreated based on nationality is just wrong in so many ways. I know we can't really do much about it but at least we can try and raise awareness so people don't even have to be in that place.. wouldn't you agree?

  19. I've heard soooo much about Turkish Airlines in the past two weeks but the problem is with our own airport too. They accept whatever flight schedule set by Turkish Airlines even if it's as early as 6:15 am in the morning. Funny thing is TIA doesn't land airplanes before 9 am anyways (I'm not sure if this is the case only in winters) but why are we giving such convenience to that air company? Also, I'm not sure if the real issue here is discriminatory behavior (I've heard worse from Swiss citizens). The problem is Turkish Airlines itself. I really do hope your article gets published in one of the Turkish newspapers. It's about time that airline acknowledges this matter and apologizes to all the passengers who have been stuck in hellish transit at Istanbul.

There were days when a plane was missed on own mistake, immigration officer in Vienna used to escort us (with out visa ) through immigration to nearby hotels after knowing we were from nepal and German embassy would give visa in an appointment after dropping a visa application a week before without an interview. Now these days are gone.

    I have been on your shoes and had to go through the same misery. Turkish Airlines indeed sucks and I second you on the point that they might be among the rudest people in Earth. They totally lacked communication skills and customer service SUCKED BIG TIME. Your article is nicely put and I would like to assist in any way to circulate this from my side so that everyone knows about the travel pain via this Airlines.

    I was travelling back from Nepal with high fever still going on. And staying/sleeping on some cold benches for almost a day was not an option I was ready to accept. You have already shared the experience through your words here. So I will not repeat the same thing here. What I want to share is the following experience I had at Istanbul, Turkey airport

    Despite all the obstacles I had to face there, I might also have been among the lucky few who was able to keep on arguing and manage to get the airport hotel. 4 of us Nepalese did group together and kept on arguing about how unfair they were and how hard it would be for us to sit outside for approximately 24 hrs. Like you stated, they were rude, we were ignored, we were sent from one desk to another and from one place to another, but we did not give up. Ultimately, after almost 4-5 hrs of discussion we were provided vouchers for stay at the Airport Hotel. 4 of us Nepalese and one US Citizen who stayed with us seeing all this unfair things happening there, were given rooms.

    Some of the Key points that we argued on were:

    1) They state that the plane to/from Nepal gets delayed due to weather in Nepal. THAT is Rubbish talk. Indian Airlines has their flights which operate from Nepal Airport at 8:00 Am. Turkish Airlines flights are scheduled at 8:45 am. Thus, how can a flight that is flying earlier can take off but not Turkish Airlines?

    2) Discrimination: Yes, this whole thing they do at Turkish Airlines Transfer Desk to all the Nepalese Passport holders is discrimination. We can understand that due to government relationship, they might not be able to grant us a transit VISA. If that is the case, they need to make arrangement for us inside the airport. They have airport hotel. We kept on stating that “Come sit with us (to the people at transfer desk), like us, at the airport benches for 23 hrs, if they could do that we could too. If not, provide us with hotel rooms.

    3) Group together at the transfer Desk (all the Nepalese) start stating the situation to other nationalities (we had mostly US Citizens around us- they heard us and started talking about how unfair it was). This helps because they now know we are making a scene of their mistake.

    4) Guys, at Turkish Airlines we have to follow the Nepalese ukhan: "Bolne ko pitho pani bikcha, na bolne ko chamal pani bikdaina". You have nothing to lose by speaking up there. So do speak up. Fight for it

    I so wish if we could publish this on Turkish Airlines Page, but they do not allow that. All we can do is share.

    I also hope that people will read your article and avoid this Airline. If no one flies to Nepal through this airline, it will be hard for them to survive in that market. And we are better off of not having such airlines to travel from.

    WARNING: DO NOT SEND YOUR PARENTS- be it in wheel chair assistance via this AIRLINE.

      I am so glad you guys managed to get the hotel. We were arguing for so long but they were just straight up rude so we settled down for food vouchers if nothing. Even getting that was so hard. They were just treating us like we were flying for free. It was so hurtful and frustrating. I am so sorry you had to go through this as well.. I just wish we could get more people to know the truth so that they could save themselves from all this hassle!

  23. Thankx Priyanka for starting this coz I was going to when I'm back in France in few days. I had my friends (French) visiting Nepal and they left before me. And the things they told me were just horrible. One had to wait for 12 hrs without anything and another just made in time. The most horrible part was when my cousin (Nepali) traveled. She was in transit to Oslo and had +15hrs layover. Refused to give her place to stay just coz she had an Nepali passport!!! OK I understand thrs an visa issue but they can at least provide access to the lounge, but no. I had to force her to show the passenger rights in EU to get her and lounge access. I'm so freaking mad although its not me traveling...but in few days yes going back with them. Lord! Save me. Or I'll make a mess out ta them. Swear to god.

    1. $900-$1100 isnt peanuts... i hear this from ppl often saying, if you paid so less for cheap, how could you expect better service. Come on, it was their promotional fare, its not that we bargained for this crappy service. We paid what they asked and they should respect each and every individuals. Customer service should not be based on how much you paid, everyone is future customer and their review will always matter. Tell me if they charged $2000 per person, would their service change? Its the attitude and service we are talking abt here. And one last time, $1k is not peanuts.

    2. @Sundeep: Really? If that was the case then why were people from US, Canada and other countries who also paid the same price got different treatment? It was not the ticket price they looked at, it was the nationality. For everyone else, I have been recommending not to take Turkish Airlines. But for you, may be you should book an economy class flight with Turkish Air for higher price and make travel to Nepal. Let us see if they treat you differently and lets see if you get the transit VISA based on the price you paid.

      Idea here is to generate awareness of the poor service and treatment Nepalese passport holders got there at Istanbul and not to judge people based on the price they paid for airline fare. Sorry, I too disagree on your statement.

      I don't think you get the whole point of this article. First of, just so you know I paid $1300 for my flight. You would understand its worth if you had been saving for long just so you could go back home.. SAFE! Also like Shashi and Bipin mentioned, that amount is not peanuts..

      Nevertheless, the boarding passes doesn't tell them what amount one paid for the ticket. There were hundreds of people boarding the aircraft and everybody's boarding passes looked the same. So trust me, they were not being biased on the price paid. People from other countries like US,UK, India, Pakistan, etc were treated differently and they paid the same price. Even Nepalese people with green cards or US citizenship got hotels. It was just us Nepalese with green passports that were being mistreated. Now what do you say? If you are say for example an American and pay peanuts they get good service. But then if you are Nepalese, you pay peanuts and get monkey.. comepletely fair huh? Yupp.. its people like you (who are okay with crappy service because you think $900-$1100 is just piece of cake) who should fly with them more and promote the discrimination that they are doing. cheers!!     5. I think they have been voted just in Europe!! And I can see why.. There was this European girl (Turkish I believe since they were speaking the same language) that was standing in line with us.. One of the workers came to her.. without her asking him.. He took her boarding pass with him even when there were about 20 ppl standing in line ahead of her.. Brought back her boarding pass and told her where to go and everything.. I was shocked! When we would stop them and ask them questions, they wouldn't even bother to answer on the other hand!

I can so much relate to what you have mentioned. very rude and snobbish people at the airport, they make you feel like a piece of shit.witnessed a security guard shouting at a lady just because she didnt understand what he was saying. one gentleman tried to take a stand for the lady, and got shouted at too, the security guard getting very aggressive. the flight always always seems to get delayed to Nepal back and forth for some reason. i kind of breathed a big sigh of relief when my flight from Nepal to London got delayed at Kathmandu airport. I had even dreaded at the thought of stopping at istanbul airport for 4 hours transit.was lucky enough to land just about an hour early before my connecting flight to London. BOYCOTTING TURKISH AIRLINE FOR LIFE! one word for them HORRIBLE!

      I'm pretty sure you will be fine if you have that because there were Nepalese ppl with American green card as well as American citizenship who got the visa or hotel to stay in.. Having said that you do have to speak up for yourself though.. They don't come to you and tell you we're gonna give you this or that..   33. Sorry about your bad experience, but I can guarantee worse than this can happen in out Tribhuwan International Airport. I never have good experience in my so call own airport with 100% Nepalese worker who speak Nepalese but too bad for the foreigners in our airport, the staff members actually try and pretend not seeing a foreign passenger and run away from them. At least the Turkish did not ask you to bribe them.

  34. My wife and I traveled via the same airport just about a month and half ago and your blog reminded my of exact thing that happened to us. I even got the manager's name and wrote a complain memo to Turkish Airlines. It is interesting to see how so many of us share the story.

  35. Exactly the same situation. I was just frustrated and was in awe about how they treated us. Got lucky enough to get free meal but no place to sleep. When I went to freshen up the people from cleaning department were asking to everyone to leave the restroom as they were going to close it for few hours! What!? Who does that!? It was just awful experience and I still have nightmares.

  38. First of all, I would like to thank Priyanka for sharing her experience with us and kicking off the discussion. Since Turkish Airlines flight to Nepal is relatively new, this post and the discussion seems to be getting a lot of attention. I hope this will inform and enlighten a lot of folks. Secondly, I would like to express sincere sympathies for Priyanka and all other who went through the ordeal. Seems like a trip from hell.
    Finally though, I want to take a step back from the bandwagon and speak up for Turkish Airlines. I want to point out that I donot work for or have any affiliations with TA, but I think the ordeal cannot be entirely blamed on TA. So let me be the devil’s advocate and provide some counter arguments. Please don’t hate me for this 
    1) Tribhuwan Airport: I read above that flight from Tribhuwan Airport is delayed by 4-5 hours every day. This seems to me a systematic issue rather than a one-off issue and if so, the blame probably lies with the Airport and the passengers. I can imagine how the security clearance luggage loading at the airport and itself is causing the delay. Can Turkish Airlines (TA) really be blamed for the delay then?
    2) Previous Nepalese Passengers: In the past, Nepalese passport holders used to get on arrival visas to almost all countries. Eventually though, this laxity began to be abused. Nepalese People began used Transit points to file for asylum or simply flee. Countries wisened up to this and placed stringent restrictions transit visas and airport checkpoints. The outcome is that Nepalese passport is among the hardest to get on-entry-visas anywhere. Like it or not, airport checkpoints are country’s legal borders and every country has right to ensure that their laws are not broken or trampled upon. There is nothing Turkish Airlines can do if Turkey has explicitly stated that Nepalese passport holders (even diplomatic ones) need to get transit visa to leave airport.     3) Nepalese Ticket buyers: I think instead of solely relying on travel agents to set up the package with connecting flights, ticket owners should also take the responsibility to ensure that there is adequate time for their connections. I understnad
    4) Airport Logistics: An argument being made is that Nepalese passengers in transit were not given airport hotel to rest. However, airport hotels are not ‘dharmashalas’ They and the Turkish airport cannot be expected to host 30-40 passengers from Nepal every day. At some point they will have to draw a line and say no, and it seems like they have.
    5) Airport Staff: A complaint I hear is that staff were rude and would not provide any answers. Well, you are from a country that cannot get transit visa on arrival, and your flight is delayed so you have to spend 24 hours in airport. Too bad! There is not much airport staff can do for you. They have basic amenities for travelers and that’s it. Again, if there are 30-40 people from Nepal missing their connecting flight every day, are loitering around airport, shouting and arguing with every staff they can get hold of, then I can imagine why they would avoid Nepalese passengers like plague!
    6) Nepal Airlines: It might seem like a stretch, but had Turkey and Nepal have bilateral airline agreement. This means that Nepal had the opportunity to make just as many flights to Turkey with its flag carrier as Turkey is doing to Nepal now. But guess what, Nepal Airlines is just way too mis-managed to take on that opportunity. The result is that TA now has no competition and can get away with this treatment.

  39. Few other points to consider:
    7) I have been way too embarrassed with my fellow Nepalese travelers every time I return home from US. People are loud, obnoxious, treat airhostesses like personal servants and are eager to grab fistful of every goodies they can hold of. We really do not set a good example ourselves, so I am not surprised when we are treated rudely.
    8) Turkish airlines is the only European Airlines to have direct flight to Nepal. There is probably a reason why all other European airlines pulled out, and if I have to make a guess – it is just not worth it. If we are going to boycott the only remaining airline, all we are doing is just isolating ourselves from a travel option and from the world itself.

      I am glad that you took time to read the material and provide your view point. Just like you, I also do not have any kind of affiliation with any airlines. I am just a normal Nepalese Citizen, who has been through this ordeal.
      First, we clearly need to understand that this is a blog which Miss. Priyanka Neupane started to make Nepalese citizens and everyone aware that travelling via Turkish Airlines can be very problematic. Again, since I have been on her shoes, I will take her side on this.
      There is no question of having hatred or anger for your writings as everyone is free to express their own opinions. However, I am surprised by some of the points you are mentioning.

      1) Your question was: Can Turkish Airlines (TA) really be blamed for the delay then?

      Answer: Yes. Reason being that on my date of Travel, Jan 1, 2014 an Indian Airlines flight took off from TIA between 8:00 am to 8:15 am. Turkish Airlines scheduled flight take off time was 8:45 am. This flight took off at 11:45 am, only- after 3 hrs of delay, which caused to miss my flight back to US that day. TA’s plane landed in Nepal only around 10 am stating the fact that Nepal’s weather did not allow to operate flight. In general if one plane can take off, cannot another land as well in same location and in same weather? May be not. I do not know.

      For security clearance or luggage loading at the airport to cause delay plane has to be there. TA plane was not there at all. It came late from Istanbul.

      2) Your statement: In the past, Nepalese People began using Transit points to file for asylum or simply flee. You have also stated that airport checkpoints are country’s legal borders and every country has right to ensure that their laws are not broken or trampled upon.

      I agree fully on the second statement. No laws/rules should be broken. But you are not getting the idea here, we are not asking them to change the laws and give us transit VISA. Yes, if that can/could be an option, it would of course be great for the stranded travelers. But we do not have that option. I also agree that TA cannot do anything in that. But cannot TA change its flight pattern so that even with delay of 4-5 hours in flight from Nepal people do not miss the connecting flight???? That is the source of all the grievances you are hearing- people missing the connections and being left (read stranded) at the airport for more than 20 hrs.

      As for the first statement, sorry to say, but it is shameful to say that because of people who did wrong in the past innocent people who do not have any intention of wrong doing need to suffer. “Ghar ma pakkai pani aalu kinera lerauda yeuta khuhiyeko paryo bhane tapaile sabbai ta falna hunna hola???? Na kuhiyeko aalu ko mitho parikar ta pakkai pakcha hola.” Bigreko chiz lai hataune ho, so that telle aarulai aasar na garos. Testai TA le flight schedule milaune ho so that tesle sabai Nepalese who are innocent lai aasar na paros. That is how I think.

      3) I am sure every passenger who deals will travel agency will try to avoid longer transit time. It is a human nature- be it a person from any country, they will naturally choose shorter transit time.

      You are telling me that there is this award winning airlines (apparently TA has won several awards) which operates hundreds of flights daily and which might have a big research team to study all the data has scheduled a non working flight pattern and we general people made the mistake by choosing that flight? COME-ON, if airline is confident that it can fly people from one country and put the passengers on next flight within an hour, you will question that and but assume it’s our fault to choose that???

      When booking flight following were the alternatives given to me when coming back to USA from Nepal:
      KTM to Istanbul to Washington DC- transit time of 23 hrs at Istanbul
      KTM to Istanbul to Chicago to Washington DC- transit time of 1 hr at Istanbul and transit time of 3 hrs at Chicago.

      Please tell me which one would you have chosen out of two?

      They cannot expect that but they can still make the daily flight??? If that is the case and if they know that they cannot deal with stranded passengers on daily basis, should not they make arrangements of some kind to avoid this situation? Again, change flight timing of the connecting flight. If they can delay flight from Nepal for 4 hrs why can’t they for the flight inbound to Chicago with same time frame? Delay in both places will insure that people will be in next flight for sure. ( Btw delay is a temporary solution. They can simply change the flight schedule by 5 hrs on both the planes)

      At some point they have to draw line and manage better rather than saying no. If their airport hotels are not “Dharmashalas” then Nepalese citizen are also not “Bhusiya Kukurs” to be abandoned at the airport for more than 20 hrs.

      And what are we talking about here, they can provide proper accomodation to 200+ ppl from a flight but not to 30-40 Nepalese? You must be kidding right? They are the best airlines in europe, wouldnt they have that much resource?

      5) Your statement: Airport Staff- A complaint I hear is that staff were rude and would not provide any answers.
      Please DO NOT make this an issue of nationality. Their rudeness was not just with us Nepalese. It was with maximum passengers, be it from any country.
      When I was dealing with them at the transfer desk, there were people from USA, people from Canada, people from India, all of whom felt the same thing.

      Your statement: I can imagine why they would avoid Nepalese passengers like plague!
      That is another problem Roshan, you are writing all this based on imagination, while we are presenting the facts. Things we saw and faced. I am sad to hear one Nepalese say to another that they are plagues.

      6) Your statement: TA now has no competition and can get away with this treatment.

      What are we then trying to accomplish here? We are trying to protect or minimize such treatments from TA especially to Nepalese people. If no one speaks up, this will keep on continuing.

      You say Nepal Airlines is just way too mis-managed. LOL.

      So, TA or Istanbul airport, where people sleep on the floor for more than 20 hrs, where people are provided cold stale sandwich with a cup of tea or coffee for breakfast, where bassinet is denied to a person travelling with a few month old baby, a managed Airlines??????

      Please don’t tell me that we suffered because Nepal Airlines does not have flight to Istanbul. So if we flew from Nepal Airlines, they would treat us differently? Hahahaha….( I seriously laughed here, thanks for that) 


      7) Since you have been way too embarrassed with fellow Nepalese travelers every time you return home from US, no wonder you are against another fellow Nepalese expressing their frustration about their trip back home.

      Roshan, I have seen Nepalese go crazy like you have described. But do you take a moment after seeing that to think from where they have come, what they might have been through and how happy they might be to be going home? Sabaiko educational level same hunna, sabailai bachha dekin etiquette sikayiyeko hunna, sabaiko ghar ma sajilo hudaina. These things make them do what they do. That is sad, I also don’t like that. But I am not embarrassed. I think there is a difference.

      Hurkiyou badhyou Nepal ma, aahile kehi barsha America basera, Nepali dekhin nai embarrassed hune, aahan ma bata chahin tyo hunna. Maaf garnu hola yadi mero lekhai le kasailai pani chot puryayeko cha bhane.

      I still say NO to Turkish Airlines IF they continue the same service.

  40. Well said Ms Neupane, a round of applause to you and your article but have you ever wondered as to why Nepalese are treated like this in the first place? not only in Turkey but everywhere in the world.

    The reason being, the Nepalese people themselves have identity crises. Eg: if they are a green card holder they expect American service and behave that they are visiting Nepal for the first time and complain everything about the country NEPAL and when they are mistreated they call themselves poor Nepalese citizens and crib about almost everything.

    Secondly it is also because of what our dear Nepalese friends had done in the past...Disappearing once they reached any European Airport. No wonder they are made to sit at the airport for the fact that if got a chance to go out they might seek refuge in that country forever. Who is to blame then, the airline or the immigration or the staffs at the airport?

    This kind of mishap has been with every carrier in the whole damn world.

    So do you think blaming an airline would justify your grievances or is this rather your frustration for holding a Green Nepali passport?

      This article is for people who are either travelling or thinking about travelling with TA so that they know what lies in front of them. I don't know how you made all those connections but I can't control your thoughts,, So go on with whatever you want to think.. People who have been flying or who know the horror experiences in aircrafts/transits will appreciate to know about it.. Rest of you folks can just take some moment to bring horrendous connections.. Have fun doing it even more!! (:

      And FYI this frustration is not because I hold green passport but because the way they treated me including everyone else with that passport... If you read it again maybe with an open mind, you might get it though!

  41. This one sounds like my story too.Being a vegetarian I had hard times at the 23 hours plus minus transit. And seriously I never felt that much worthless in my life. We should do something. My full support on whatever goes with this.
    And one more thing, I just heard from my Bangladeshi friend that they provided him a hotel on the transit so its something beef going on with turkey and Nepal?

  42. A little research helps when u r traveling. We did a little research on the internet and found that we can reserve the airport hotel online. And that is what exactly we did. We knew our flight would be delayed and we would be stuck in Turkey for almost 24 hrs. So we reserved a hotel inside the airport and got the got the confirmation on reservation a day before we flew out of Kathmandu. They do not charge anything for reservation (TAV airport hotel). Once we got to Turkey, we told them that we had reserved the hotel and showed them the confirmation. They called the hotel to verify this and gave us a room to stay in. Was not too bad. Would suggest any Nepali traveling through Istanbul via Turkish airlines to do the same. My experience has been a good so far.(Fingers Crossed). I still have to fly to USA. In Transit at Istanbul now. That being said, yes I have noticed a little difference in tone when they find that you have a Nepalese passport, but that's the case whichever European country you pass through (although some people are more subtle about it than the people in Turkey).       Are you saying that if you reserve the TAV Airport hotel in advance, you do not have to pay to get the room? I doubt that. I have friends who stayed there and had to pay approx $300 for 9 hrs or room time. But if what you are saying is true, then it might be a good idea to promote this. At least other Nepalese will not suffer.

      Can you please clarify if you paid for the room or not after you made the advance reservation?

      I just reserved my room at the hotel (airside) they didn't ask me for my credit card number and my reservation is confrimed. But what's bothering me now is this part of the message :

      "We have noted that your reservation is guaranteed.



      The room will be held all night in case of a No-Show, one night room charge will be billed to your account.

      Please note that our cancellation policy is until 06:00 p.m. on the prior day of arrival."

      But they don't have my card number how can they charge me? Do u guys think hey will get the infos from TK passengers account?

      That was the point I was trying to understand from Sachin. He was not clear whether he paid for the room or not.

      Just to be sure, I suggest you call Turkish Airlines Customer Service here in US (I am assuming you are in US) and verify in case we don't hear back from Sachin in time to be sure.

      I think they will have our address in the system and they might use it to send the bill later. But I am just guessing here.

      I hope Sachin replies back.

      Note that I along with 3 other Nepalese got this same airport hotel for free but after discussion of almost 4 to 5 hrs. I wish you good luck.

      Right now I'm in Nepal going back to France. I replied back to an email send by the hotel telling me that my reservation is guaranteed. I asked him how the thing was done as they didn't ask my CC and his answer was :

      We will need a credit card guarantee to hold the room. the room will be held guaranteed to the credit card you will send.

      If you don’t show up at the hotel, room charge will be made to the guaranteed credit card.

      But the thing is I already have a email saying guaranteed. So I'm guessing I should just go and show the reservation at the TK desk and hopefully they will give me a room. Well the best thing is no delays of course.

  43. Actually I really liked some of the view point of the commentators... I feel really bad for Miss. Neupane but really there are so many problem within us and no 1 is our Tribhuvan International Airport:
    1st point: Tribhuwan International Airport is one of the most overcrowded airport in the world not because we have the most passengers travelling but because we have only one runway operating since its establishment. Its not only your flight madam..... every single international flights gets delayed there for 3 to 4 hours everyday 24/7/365.... the airport computer system is from 2nd century BC gifted by Plato. When I travelled back to US in 2006 the boarding pass and baggage claim was hand written due to system failure and my Thai airways flight was delayed for 4 hours. Even the pilot joked about it mid flight. When I was travelling from Singapore to KTM in 2008, the aircraft had to roam around in the sky for an hour to wait for its turn to land. So here lies the big problem that's within us and our own airport.

    2nd point: It's hard to get great service at cheap price. Its stupid to ask for Virgin America amenities paying the price of Spirit Airlines.

    3rd point: From next time if u r flying within United states Always fly Virgin America or business select or 1st class tickets from any other airline. If u buy spirit airlines tickets u will be writing same blog again in future.

    4th point: if flying to nepal take Delta Airlines Business class... they have the best service....I had great time with them going back to nepal in 2010.

    1. Took your point in account but does every Nepali has a way to afford that business class or first class you talking about? And second : Delta doesn't fly to Nepal. What you talking about!
      I flew Delta J class from Boston to CDG via AMS ( the worst service ever) rude old flight attendants. My special meal wasn't onboard and she asks me what she is suppose to do. I mean really!! I need to explain her how to do her job!! Call the catering...demerde toi...je ne sais pas.. Do something...excuse first. Necer take Delta on transatlantic route. I préfer KLM or Air France.

Haven't flown KLM and Air France so can't comment on that.....Delta used to have direct flight from SFO (San Francisco) to NRT(Narita Airport Japan) and from direct service from NRT to Bangkok Thailand.....I took Thai airways from Bangkok to KTM....but my primary carrier was Delta Airlines....I prefer Virgin America all day everyday...but it doesnt fly everywhere.... I fly delta for being skymiles member.
      P.S: I know delta doesnt fly to Nepal...m sure not in next 100 years also one more thing Delta now flies from LAX to NRT directly instead of SFO route.

      Just to clear few things out.

      a) This is not the story of a day or two that you can just blame the airports on and get away with. I found out this has been happening for over two months now. Is Turkish Airlines doing anything to fix this? NO! Is TIA responsible that TA decided not to provide us accommodation in Turkey? NO! I don't understand why ppl are saying we can't say anything just because TIA sucks.. Maybe it does, who knows! But I can say for TA and TAV airport because terrible things happened to me there.. Imagine having to stay in an airport for 23 hours w/ no good service??? That didn't happen to me in TIA so why would I say its TIA's fault?       Firstly, Really???????? You are talking about the things that happened in 2006 and 2008 at Nepal airport (or in the mid air there) when all this talk is about the things that happened on 2013/2014 at the ISTANBUL, TURKEY AIRPORT inside terminal. I cant even relate the thing you are saying and the things that happened to us.

      Secondly, REALLY????? You believe it is due to cheap fare price? Hmmmm. I guess we forgot to mention, right now Turkish Airlines are offering promotion prices as they started their operation in Nepal from Sept 2013 only. The price for the same ticket (economy class) will be going up in future. I do not believe that price increase will improve the service nor Nepalese passport will be getting a VISA.

      Thirdly, like REALLY????? You are suggesting business class for Nepalese people in general when they are flying home? No offence to you, not everyone will be in position to afford a first class ticket. Specially if one is a student, this is almost impossible.

      With due respect sir, this is about an airlines which is NOT doing anything to prevent almost approximately a 24 hrs transit time due to delay in flight from their part.

      FYI, I flew from Nepal to Istanbul on Jan 1, 2014. But;

      - Turkish Air's scheduled flight time- 8:45 am
      - Their actual flight time- 11:45 am
      - Blamed on: Nepal's weather
      - Our Defense to that: Indian Airlines plane flew from Nepal airport on the very same day between 8:00 am to 8:15 am ( I assume weather only affected Turkish Air and not other planes :) )

      Glad you can afford business class tickets. But greater percentage of Nepalese travelers CANNOT. We BELONG and SPEAK for the later.

      Thank you for taking a good stand. Also I wosh we'd come across article like this before so we'd have been more prepared and booked hotels and everything like someone suggested.. Sadly, we went there and found out what was ahead of us..

      Some people don't seem to get it though.. Or the whole point of me writing this article.. They think I am just here killing my time bitching abt some airlines.. What they've missed to see is that there are many more Nepalese ppl ready to fly from nepal via TA. If they come across this, they are at least going to know what to expect.. I don't know if I should be disappointed or laugh at the ignorance,,

      In another note, I hope everything works out for you.. and do really hope you get out of the airport w/o having to spend a penny on anything..   46. I do not want to sound negative but I have learned that never trust any airlines these days as more or less all of them treat the passengers foul way. Its not only a matter of Nepalese but to all other citizens. I make no differences between airline and bus services. If you get good service, that's great, otherwise always prepare yourself for the emergencies.

    Until you go for heated argument, don't expect anything. Some time even these airlines force people to share the room in case the flight is cancelled when you even don't know about other fellow passenger. Never accept this and be prepared to call the airline managers or police. Its not the problem at ground staff but the problem at governance level who these days are not transparent and accountable.

    One last thought, don't try to save little money and go for reputed service oriented airlines and on the long run, you will still save money that you have to spend at stranded airport.

  47. This seems to be a recurring theme for passengers (of
    Multiple nationality) transiting through European hubs. I'd be careful making it a race or a country specific issue. Keep in mind most of these airlines are for profit business and do not exert total control over airport or border security and related policies. I can totally empathize with ppl stranded in Airports as I too have been there. Having said that, I understand how that scarring experience can lead to a misguided outpour. Nonetheless, this is good as passengers should be aware of the underlying risks and make informed decisions.

      I am sure Priyanka's idea is not to encourage or focus any specific racial profile. But we all Nepalese have been suffering when flying via this airlines thus you hear country specific words. I am sure there are other countries from Asia who got similar treatment.

      Yes, idea here is to generate awareness to all the people, be it from any country, of what might happen if they fly via Turkish Airlines. If possible also make Turkish Airlines realize what wrong they are doing and try to prevent or at least minimize it.

  48. i had to wait at this airport as the flight to kathmandu was delayed by 5:30 hours.. but yes.. did notice a lot of frayed nerves and rude people who sat behind "miles of smiles" counter... an airport where one has to pay online for wifi! and yes, the aircraft with no individual screens, (infact even the other screens had nothing to display) and non functioning remote control for lights, made someone in the aisle comment " यो त नाइट बसमा चढेको जस्तै भयो" !

I RECENTLY TRAVEL THROUGH TURKISH AIRLINE…MAY BE JUST A MONTH AGO…AND TELL ME ABOUT THE RUDENESS..I WAS TRAVELLING WITH THE LAP BABY…I BOOKED BASSINET BEFOREHAND BUT THEY SAID THEY DON'T HAVE ANY SINCE ALL OF THEM WAS TAKEN….I HAD TO CARRY HER IN THE LAP THROUGHOUT THE FLIGHT…I ASKED FOR EXTRA PILLOW…AND THE ATTENDANT SAID THEY DON'T HAVE ANY EXTRA ONES…AND THE LADY BACK OF ME GOT 2 EXTRA ONE MAY BE A MINUTE AFTER…..SINCE I NEEDED THE CHANGING STATION FOR MY BABY AND SIGNS WERE CONFUSING TO ME…I ASKED ONE OF THE ATTENDANT AND SHE SAID THEY DON'T HAVE ONE…BUT THANK GOD I FINALLY FIGURE OUT MYSELF…..THEY HARDLY SERVE 2 MEAL IN 12 HOUR FLIGHT….I DIN'T GET THE PERSONNEL HYGINE PACK WITH TOOTHBRUSH AND ALL…I ASKED FOR ONE AND THE LADY ATTENDANT SAID THEY DON'T HAVE ANY…I ASK WITH ANOTHER ONE AND SHE GOT ME FROM BUSINESS CLASS……THIS WAS THE EXPERIENCE GOING TO NEPAL….ON THE WAY BACK TO UNITED STATES….the flight was delay for 3 hrs at first place ……when we get in the flight was just 1/3rd full….i asked the attendant if the board in was complete…intact i asked with 2 of them…they said yes…my husband and my little one move to the empty window seat on the back…they give you the extra red belt for child that goes around the adult one….and they were both enjoying the window seat…and suddenly there was a last minute board in and he had to move to his original place …meanwhile he misplace the child seatbelt at the back…i asked for another one…and oh boy,,,,….talk to me about rudeness,…the lady attendant was shouting as if she was my mom…" where did you put it han?? he keep saying can i have another one….she goes where is the one i gave it to you…no i cannot give you another one ….first tell me where is the one i gave you…" really as if he kept it inside his bag or sty…and now it was time for food…since we booked for hindu non veg upfront when we bought the ticket..i got the non veg one and my husband was told he had no choice beside beef…and i was pissed big time….i was explaining her about how we booked it..and how come i got the especial meal and not him? but she was not listening and put the beef tray in his table…i was so mad..i shouted at her and finally got the hindu meal….i mean its so ridiculous you have to fight for your own food….how come say if it wasn't book….half of nepalese people don eat beef and their is no option beside beef in the menu at all….thats the ignorance toward us….then i asked for a hot water for my baby to make her formula…and the lady attendant i asked for…she said she don't have any…and I asked where can I get one and she said i don't have any…excuse their language….so rude and pathetic…and again i asked the another attendant and he gave me one from the same place from where lady attendant said she had none…..with all these extraordinarily rude experience I landed United States…a nd now my one luggage has been missing.. Its been a month..i emailed them..call them in everyday basis…but their is no bag..and no compensation yet…I WOULD SAY…HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO IGNORANT, RUDE AND EXCUSE MY LANGUAGE A BIG PAIN IN A**… WE DON'T TRAVEL FOR FREE….AND PEOPLE IN THIS KIND OF FIELD WHERE..POLITENESS AND GENUINE COUNT THE MOST…DOESN'T HAVE ANY….WE TRAVEL 20 HOURS IN YOUR FLIGHT SO PLEASE TRY TO MAKE IT PLEASANT NOT ONE OF THOSE AFTER WHICH….WE WILL SO…BIG NO TO TURKISH AIRLINE…AND I WILL NEVER TRAVEL AGAIN….

  51. The only country I found with respect fo Nepalese is singapore. The worst experience comes from Delhi airport. We are slightly better off than pakistan nationals. They are treated worst in most of the airports in europe from security. Its really inhumane. I was planning to fly through Turkish arilines just to give it a try, but will be cancelling it. Thanks.

  52. Well, this is quite a horrible story. Once I traveled via India and it wasn't good during my transit in Mumbai. We were not given the boarding pass for connecting flight at ktm so we asked it at Mumbai airport. But the airlines person was very rude towards me and fellow nepalese passenger after seeing our Nepalese passport. He was behaving as if we had done a crime. We definitely wouldn't want any problem so basically did ignore his attitude. Probably, the wrong person at the wrong time as we know it might not be case with everyone but being a nepali I wouldn't recommend nepalese brothers and sisters to fly via India never gonna fly myself through their land.
    So, basically its a plight of being citizen of poor country that everybody damn care you and don't give you s###. But my suggestion for you for publicising your story is to contact mysansar.com online blog instead of running after other news agencies. Cuz its quite popular among the Nepalese living abroad as you may know and also I think have a high chance of getting your story on their page as they keep posting the stories of many Nepalese living abroad. So it would be beneficial for more Nepali ( living abroad & travel more ) to know about your story. Hope it gets done and see your story at mysansar. All the best.

  54. What a misery situation to be! I am sorry to hear you guys had to go through. No wonder Turkish airlines tickets are cheaper than other airlines which is roughly around £100. I guess its catch 22 (cheap flight shitty flight ) ;p. I am heading to Nepal from London to celebrate Loshar next week.     i read all you articles that you face problem,during your travel in Turkish.. its not only the Turkish that all people having problem , you should know there are many places like this ..when you travel with green passport specially Nepalese citizen and treat very different in airport , i my self had face lot of like that problem so after traveling so many time..i knew that unless you don't fight you don't get you right .I am from media ..i might could help you for this in my own way but i need some of the evidence ..i have my brother working in ..Annapurna post ..as editor .so what you done writing this articles makes people really helpful .. and i really wanna appreciate for your articles 100% like.

All I can say is besides the stories of horrific experiences from the victims, I don't think we have fool-proof evidence.. The whole situation was just too tiring for us to be thinking straight and coming up w/ an idea for later by collecting evidences.. If our personal stories work, it would be a great!

    I am from Bangladesh, a lot of Bangladeshis also got same bad experience. Any way they managed to get visa because of mutual visa agreement. However, I figured out why the people working for airports seems so rude. In turkey English is not popular. They do not teach English even in higher studies inside turkey. If you they do not understand your language you missed communication, and it is true for almost all stuffs inside the airport. Very few personnel know English. This is really very strange how an international airport is running without English. Few days ago I was returning from Bangladesh and I managed to go inside instanbul. What I noticed inside istanbul they just don't care English. Probably, not knowling english made them rude and stupid or unfriendly. I am just sharing that as Bangladeshi we are also having same problem of delayed flights and mistreatment over months except the visa policy.

    Thank you for sharing your experience. This will help lot of us to decide airlines.

      I'm so sorry you had to go through similar experience.. but lucky that you guys managed to get the hotel.. English was definitely a barrier but I think the rudeness was something beyond language barrier..

      For example, a girl working at the TA Helpdesk was arguing with me that i didn't fly with them. I had my boarding pass on my hand, and asking her to give me food voucher but she was still telling me I didn't fly with them.. After her manager asked her to issue me the food voucher, she threw back my boarding pass as well as my food voucher while I hand my hand out to take it from her.. Do you think that is just the language barrier?

      I mean I know etiquette varies from one place to another but then above all that is treating someone with respect.. Apart from the language barrier, I didn't feel any worker in that airport respected people talking to them.. Not a single person so i don't think we can blame it on just the language you know..

      Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience as well.. I've learnt a big lesson so next time I decide to fly for longer destinations, i will do a lot of research before getting a ticket.. I hope you do the same! (:

  62. I would like to make a few points about the article above.

    Firstly, while it is frustrating to not be able to leave the airport, not being issued a visa is nothing to do with Turkish Airlines, it is due to the immigration law of that particular country. It would be the same for everyone, unless you are from a visa exempt country. I imagine many of the non Nepali passengers were from countries which did not need a visa for Turkey. It is the same transiting through India, I know many people (from many different nationalities, including Nepali) who have been stuck in Delhi for 24+ hours due to a missed connection to and from Kathmandu. They were not allowed to exit due to the fact they did not have an Indian visa, or due to other immigration laws. It would be the same anywhere in the world.

    Secondly, this kind of delay and frustration in airports is widespread all over the world. Some of the treatment you get from European low cost airlines can be far worse, they will not even put you in a hotel, whether you need a visa or not, and some will not make alternative arrangements if your flight is cancelled. When the winter snow chaos hits Europe people can be camped out in airports for days.

    Thirdly, there is no way that Turkish airlines can just change their schedule. Airlines are running a hugely complex operation, and the timing of flights is linked to factors such as landing slots, availability of aircraft and crew management.

    I hope you have had some experience of travelling from the Nepali domestic airport in the winter season, when flights are regularly delayed, with no information at all. Sometimes there is not even a seat, let alone places to eat. Once after a finally being allowed to board a flight which was already delayed, we were sat on the airport bus waiting for another half an hour waiting for a VIP to board first.

    We Nepali people really need to come out of the mentality that we are being treated differently because we are Nepali. What about Nepali airlines who think it is perfectly acceptable to charge foreigners three times more for airfares, making their domestic flights some of the most expensive in the world. This is not practiced anywhere else.

    I very much agree that it can be frustrating, but we can lobby for a better service rather than avoiding a particular airline, as Nepal needs as many flights as it can to ensure fares remain affordable. For example, it can cost as little as £300 to fly to Delhi return from London, whereas it is almost double going to Nepal!

      Thank you for taking your time out to read the article. All your points considered.

      I respect your opinion and I hope you do the same for mine. I'm not sure if you ever had to stay inside an airport for so long with that bad of a service when everyone else around you gets special treatment. If I was in your place I'm sure I would have been judgmental about it since its not me who had to go through all that. As I mentioned in my post, you can only understand the depth of emotions once you go through them yourself.

      I'm sure if I had been in your place I would be calculating the factual details about visa not being issued, which other airlines also does that, flight timings and whatsoever! But trust me above all these factual details comes humanity.. I can speak for Nepalese people because there were a bunch of only Nepalese people trying to figure out where to go.. Everybody was just avoiding our questions, not providing us any reliable information and what not.. I didn't see a group of Americans, Chinese, or people from other nationality doing the same.. WHY? Once their boarding passes were issued they were given information and also provided with either in-airport or outside-airport hotels!

      Ok fine they can't issue us visa.. but how can they accommodate 200+ people from everywhere else and not accommodate 30+ people from Nepal in in-airport hotel?

      I'm sure people have their own horror stories from different airports.. Some decide to write and some don't.. If this had happened to me in India or even in Nepal I'd have still written about it.. you're missing the whole point!

      And sorry but I disagree with you.. If they think accommodating few and only Nepalese people for 23+ hours is too much for them for whatsoever reason (since you said its not based on nationality so you would know better!) then I would def. encourage at least Nepalese people to avoid it..

      Again its your decision after all.. I can't control everybody else's thoughts.. So if you still want to fly with them that's your call.. I was just trying to aware people so that they can decide if they want to fly with dignity or not.. And I think everybody has right to express their opinion.. So I do respect yours but I apologize to say I disagree with all of them like you do for mine!

      What is frustrating here is that when people like you are twisting and turning the core idea of the initial post of this blog.

      I think I alone have repeated many times that this post is to make people aware regarding problems they will have to face, both inside the plane and at the Istanbul airport, when flying via Turkish Airlines. Thus, avoiding them might actually be helpful to many Nepalese.

      If we are expressing our opinion that Turkish Air should better manage their practices so that people are not stranded at the airport for long hours, are we asking for a lot????? No one will need a VISA if their (TA) flights are able to operate on scheduled time. BUT THAT IS NOT HAPPENING.

      You say that there is no way that Turkish Airlines can change their schedule...LOL....then why do they take 3 to 4 hours from the scheduled time to reach Nepal or vice versa? Your statement is not matching here.

      Also, please don't bring special winter challenges airlines (in different countries) have to face here. Those are special circumstances I believe. This problem with Turkish Air for their flights from Nepal is not a thing of day or two or of a week or two. This has now been going on for months. If they know the problem and yet they are not doing anything to at least minimize it, then YES, it is their fault.

      Please do start a new blog to point out problems of Nepal airport or its airlines. Since u seem to have faced problems there, you will have a good platform to write on. If stated facts are correct, I will fully support you there in that topic.

      Finally, in regards to changing the mentality where we think we were treated different because we are Nepali is very hard because we were ACTUALLY treated differently.

      So far, I have found that only 4 of us Nepalese were issued airport hotel voucher at Istanbul Airport. We were not VIP's, we were not from RICH families, we were not disables needing special attention....all we were- COMMON NEPALESE CITIZENS with Nepalese Passport on hand. We ere given the same torture. But we kept on putting facts to them, kept on fighting and ultimately we were provided hotel stating that it was their mismanagement that led to all the problems we were facing.

      Now, if we 4 Nepalese were told that and given hotel rooms inside the airport, why were all other Nepalese who through this blog have stated they suffered and were not provided hotel room were treated differently????

      Once again, please understand, this blog is not the frustration of not getting the VISA at turkish airport, this is more about their rudeness, uncooperativeness of the staff there ( this was not just with Nepalese btw, it was with citizens from every country at that transfer desk), and YES their mismanagement that led to our fellow Nepalese to suffer at the airport for more than 20 hrs.

  63. I can understand the frustration and anger going on. However, I don't think only Istanbul airport and Turkish Airline are responsible. You don't even have to be at Istanbul, the issue starts from our neighbor country itself. Its the problem with being labelled as one of the poor countries. So, bear it for couple of centuries since Nepal does not have any sign of improvement until then. Anyways, thanks for sharing. I was thinking of taking Turkish airlines for travelling, watching its advertisements. I won't do so. :D

    Thanks for the article. I totally understand and empathize with you for the horrific experience you had and the worthlessness you guys must have felt afterwards. I have been in that situation while flying through Delhi in 2005. It in fact goes way beyond what Priyanka described here in her article. Since then I have stopped flying via India 'for life'. Now that you pointed out the nightmarish condition Nepalese have to bear in Turkey as well, I have put TA in my blacklist too.I was considering booking one with them. But I have to point it out here that as long as our country remains a banana republic, we will forever be treated like this, everywhere in the world. I have flown through (trying out each time) at least three countries in the middle east. They treat you better than in India for sure (or Istanbul as per your experiences) but not that better either. You still go through one or other ways of discrimination when they see our green passport . Humans are like that everywhere. They like to try and impress people they consider better than themselves and simply treat their inferiors in the most demeaning way. Even those poor Turkish people are treated like rats in Europe, especially in Germany. And our people back home?? We have all seen how badly the Nepalese labor force travelling to middle east are dealt with by our own Tribhuvan Airport officials. Tesaile, like Upendra Mahato once said; if we want other people to treat us with some dignity and see us, we (the country and the people) should rise up to the level. We should always for us to keep at the back of our mind. Else we will be reading more blogs about worse airlines and I am afraid I wont have much of a choice left after I put them all in my black list. Nepal ra hami Nepali ko bhalo hosh.

But really guys i dont want you to think like all the turkish people are like that...i have a nepalese boyfriend here that i love more than myself...turkish people loves people from abroad countrues. They help them and do the best they can do to protect them from outer dangers...well...this may not seem so real to you...but the majority of turks are like that guys...again so sorry for what you have been through as a turk...good day!

  77. Istanbul Airport has issues in dealing with problems customers are experiencing. There is poor preparation, lack of understanding and knowledge. If something goes wrong or if you miss a connecting flight, you are out of luck. If you arrived on an international flight and missed your connecting flight because your flight was delayed, be prepared to exit the airport first, turn around and go thru security and passport check again to reenter. After reentering where you were before, find someone to issue you a new ticket for a later flight and if all goes well, walk one mile to the domestic terminal (if you are continuing in Turkey). Of course, during all this, you might end up missing your flight again because you were too slow. If you ask for directions, everyone tries to help but their knowledge doesn't get you far and you will be lost. This was the experience of my 80 year old parents yesterday. Luckily they are Turkish and they could speak the language. I can't imagine the troubles if they weren't speaking Turkish.
    The good thing is we Turkish treat everyone equally so Nepalese are welcome.

    Once, on my journey to Nepal from Europe I traveled via Istanbul. I took a transit visa from a local Turkish Consulate. I was advised if I didn't want to go out of the airport, I would not need a transit visa for airport stay for 24 hours. Unfortunately, Nepal is highly non-reliable country as a source of illegal immigration and there is a high pressure on Turkey from EU (as Turkey is doing everything possible to enter into EU). So the country is regulating citizens of listed country (there was a list in front of immigration officer in Airport counter) who are thoroughly controlled in Turkish immigration points. So forget about getting a transit visa on arrival. What is surprising me is how few Nepalese got out of airport as you mentioned, which is highly impossible. Of course, having some kind of middle Eastern influence on the nation, I agree Turkey is not highly civilized.

    About boycotting Turkish Airlines, I don't think it matters to the Turkish government. It would not bother their government even if Turkish Airline needed to halt operation in Nepal. My advice to people (from non visa free countries) living in Europe is to get a transit visa for around 15 Euro before departure if your any connection flight has a tight schedule. I don't know about the people living in North America as I have no idea about how many cities/states have consulates of Turkey. If it is convenient get a transit visa, visit Istanbul, carry on onward journey. Otherwise, accept the fact or fight for a hotel if you can secure, even though its not legally exempted to leave airport without a visa.

      The connecting flight delay is a regular phenomena with Turkish airlines (mostly for the people whose flight originates from Nepal). A plane that flies to Kathmandu from Istanbul, lands at 6:15 in Kathmandu and heads back to Istanbul after 1 hour 30 minutes stop! What a narrow time margin for the flight to get there, load off, prepare, load in and fly back!

      And they book the connecting flight for the people who have just 45 minutes time in Istanbul airport to connect the further flight! All flights heading to the US has less than 1 hours connection time, imagine you are always missing the onward flight from Istanbul.

      So, my suggestion for the people who need visa to enter Turkey: Either get a transit visa assuming that you are going to miss the connection and get ready for the "one day sight seeing" of Istanbul. Or stay inside the transit lounge for 24 hours.

      The best option is to go for alternates, even if you need to pay more: If you get a flight ticket from Qatar Airways or Etihad or Oman air, buy with them and pay even more than hundred bucks as they manage connecting flights better than Turks and have better customer care.

      I am sure by now, TA has already experienced decrease in passenger to and from Kathmandu because of the connecting flight issue. And they don't fix it, their government doesn't let you get out of the airport, and why should you care about Turkish Airlines!....just let them do what they do and we as passengers do what is better for us!

      for those who have already suffered, one way to complain is to CONTACT and COMPLAIN with Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

      AGAIN, IF YOU BEAR A PASSPORT FROM VISA REQUIRING COUNTRY, THINK AT LEAST 5 TIMES BEFORE BUYING TURKISH AIR TICKET.

Turkish people are very racist in my opinion.I'm from pakistan and i travelled to turkey a couple of months back.I stayed six days in istanbul and one in konya and zero hospitality.I've lived in england and i've met people from other parts of the globe but nobody not even french are as snobbish.No one talks to you and noone helps you.That is the treatment i received in turkey.Same was the case with their airports and planes.We even travelled to konya on a domestic flight.If you think turkish airlines are bad wait till you use their domestic flights.And their air hostessess are bitches .Pakistani airlines doesn't have really good looking hostessesss but at least they're humane.They have one of the worlds largest tourist industries yet most of the people don't know how to speak english.Now that's just ungratefullness.What use is such beauty.

And i had a fight with one of the security memebers at the domestic airport i would've definetly complained about him if i had had the chance to but my parents were with me.They require you to take of your belt twice which is so annoying and you can't even move .While i was coming out of the airport my parents were left way behind me so i decided to go back and tell them to come quick but i was stopped all cause i was brown.That is typical racism and they look at you as if they're looking at shit.With disgusted expressions on their face.I would never do that to anyone .

  84. TURKISH AIRLINES IS HORRIBLE

    We will NEVER fly on Turkish Airlines again and we will tell all our friends and family to avoid this horrible airline.

    First, we were vacationing in Antalya, Turkey and we decided to buy another plane ticket and fly to Istanbul to spend a week there. We then re-scheduled our original ticket from Antalya to Istanbul to Algeria so we could just catch the connecting flight in Istanbul a week later since we would be in Istanbul on the earlier flight. When the time came to fly to Algeria from Istanbul, Turkish Airlines gave us problems at the airport and ran us around (Their Supervisor was an asshole; but I gave him some real New York attitude and feedback on the spot). They claimed we had to CHANGE our ticket which did NOT make any sense since we were at the airport on time and there was an hour before our connecting plane was to leave. They made us go to the ticket booth to change our ticket. When we got to the ticket booth, the attendant told us that we missed our flight even thought the flight did not leave for one hour. She made us pay $800 for new tickets and told us the plane leaves 2 days later. We had to pay for another hotel room and cab fare.

    These people are a bunch of filthy crooks. They did that just to get more money from us. But I promised them that I would sue them on my own New York turf and that is exactly what I am going to do to Turkish Airlines so everyone can see what a bunch of bad character crooks they are. Turkish Airlines can hire a New York lawyer now and pay thousands of dollars in legal fees. Turkish Airlines may have stole $800 from us; but in the end, they will pay thousands to their New York attorney. Since I work within the legal system, suing Turkish Airlines for FREE except the filing and service costs will be easy for me.

    OUR EXPERIENCE in Turkey was NOT very good. The Turkish people are rude, mean and they try to cheat you when they can. And they DON'T SMILE. The kind people we met were NOT turkish. I would NEVER come back to Turkey again and if I see a Turkish person in New York City, I am going to treat them exactly the way they treated us in Turkey, rude and mean. In other words, I don't like Turkish people at all.

    MESSAGE FOR TURKISH AIRLINES......You got me in your backyard; but I promised you that when I get to New York City I am going to SUE you and bring you before a Judge and I will post the lawsuit on the Internet for all to read your dirty character. I will see you in court.....

    When we were forced to buy our ticket, there was another guy who had a boarding pass and he was refused access to his gate because they said the plane leaves in one hour and he had to be there before that hour. Another women was crying on the ticket line because they caused her to miss her plane and refused to allow her to go to her gate

Similar experience here: Flight from Kathmandu to Istanbul was cancelled because of technical problems with the plane on October 11th - everybody had to get off the plane after it was already on the tarmac. Ground staff was completely overwhelmed trying to rebook 250 passengers and unsuccessfully tried to get me a ticket on Etihad via Abu Dhabi (my final destination was Zurich). I bought a ticket myself on Etihad (one way was cheaper then half the round trip fare on Turkish). When I went back to Turkish they only partially refunded the ticket withholding some taxes and ticket issuance fees. Big bureaucracy in giving the money back differently from crediting to the CC used to book the flight ("We need a letter from your bank"). Absolutely no compensation or food was offered to compensate for the delay and inconvenience (I arrived 13 hours later in Zurich than originally planned).

  89. Guys, my sister just had an awful experience with them. She was flying from Bucharest to Dubai and she had a connexion there. The flight had a delay and she lost her connexion. She and the others passengers that were in the same situation, had to spend the night there because they did not offer them any connexion with others companies. They were rude and they did not offer them anything, not even water. In the morning, my sister and other three passenger manage to take a flight back to Bucharest but they lost their luggages thou my sister insist to check carefully that they send it with them. We hope that they will find their luggages. She told me that in Istanbul Airport she met a girl from Brazilia that she was there for 4 days waiting to fly back home. They gave her a stand-by ticket but the flight were full and she was still in waiting. Some folks from Coreea were in the same situation and they were there for 2 days. For your sake, please avoid Turkish Airline as much as you can.

  109. I flew Atlanta to İstanbul via Turkish Airlines Baggage Policy and transfer İstanbul to Jakarta. When I started to open my luggage I realized they broke my Samsonite luggage. It was new. First time I used and it was 300 $ ish . When I realized damage i claim baggage damage from their website and after 2 days they told me passenger must apply lost and found office we will not send your money or baggage back.. what the hell this is!!!!!! They broke my Samsonite luggage and they are even not taking responsibility!!! Don't fly with Turkish airlines. What should I do about it I suppose to be have right and their website also saying until 7 day you can claim baggage damage. Can anybody help me i am so pissed off I lost my 300$ baggage.
